Presenters Include Heather Black, David Flaherty, Michael Geist and Patricia Wilson

For immediate release

MONTREAL, CANADA December 14, 2004 Synomos Inc., makers of the Align Data-Policy Provisioning Suite, today announced a free teleconference session where Canadian legal, privacy and technology experts will discuss the changing landscape of privacy enforcement in Canada. This teleconference is presented as part of Synomos’ ongoing Professional Education Series and is co-sponsored by Osler, Hoskins & Harcourt and Nymity Inc. It is open to the public and participants can register by visiting http://www.synomos.com."As of January, all Canadian companies subject to compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) will have been covered by the Act for at least one year. In this time, a new privacy commissioner has taken office, provincial legislation has been brought forth, and courts have begun to interpret PIPEDA," said Patrick Sullivan, Senior Vice President of Policy Advisory Services at Synomos. "In light of these factors, Canadian privacy professionals are grappling with how best to ensure appropriate management, implementation and communication of data policy programs within the enterprise."
Mr. Sullivan will moderate the teleconference. Attendees will include compliance, privacy, data security and governance officers, and managers of organizations who do business with Canadian citizens and companies.
Panelists will address the following issues:
- What steps should companies take to review their PIPEDA compliance programs?
- What constitutes “reasonable effort” in Canadian privacy compliance?
- How has the risk profile of Canadian privacy changed with the Federal Court overturning lower courts and the federal Privacy Commissioner’s Office?
- Will the Englander decision propel further litigation and enforcement from federal & provincial commissioners or is it an isolated case?
Panelists:
- Professor Michael A. Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-Commerce Law, University of Ottawa Law School.
- Heather H. Black, Assistant Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
- David H. Flaherty, member of the External Advisory Committee to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
- Patricia J. Wilson, Partner in the Litigation Group of Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt.
